KFV – Living Safely # 13 - Evaluation of Shared Road Spaces
The “shared road space” or “shared road zone” concept (in German: Begegnungszone) was adopted as a mode of organising road use in a 2013 Amendment to the Austrian Road Traffic Act (Straßenverkehrsordnung). Since then, shared road spaces have been introduced in numerous Austrian towns and cities. As part of the study described in this report, twelve such zones were selected across the whole of Austria for detailed analysis. The goal of this study was to investigate the impact of shared road spaces on the traffic situation, on the behaviour of road users and on road safety.
