SafeT |

SafeT is a "Safety in Tunnels" Thematic Network on development of European guidelines for upgrading tunnel safety. The European Thematic Network is funded by the European Commission in the 5th Framework Programme.
The members of the SafeT network will analyse existing literature and current practices on tunnel safety, draft work documents and reports and make harmonised guidelines for tunnel safety. In communities of practice the members will prepare network meetings with discussions and amendments of work documents, draft report or guidelines via the interactive SafeT website. The discussions will be concluded in Network meetings. The activities will be carried out within a period of three years, partially overlapping, stages:
- Inventarisation during the first project year to determine the current state of practice with respect to tunnel safety on the human, technical and organisational level.
- Specific tunnel safety issues will be worked out in this stage: Prevention and detection of incidents or accidents, Consequence mitigation of incidents or accidents, Post-accident investigation and evaluation, Harmonised risk assessment and Integrated tunnel safety management.
- In this stage the Tunnel Safety Guidelines will be developed, demonstrated and validated.
Description of the consortium Members of the SafeT network are authorities, tunnel operators, producers of tunnel safety equipment, fire brigades, tunnel safety consultants and experts on tunnel safety of research institutes. The mission – i.e. to develop advises for feasible and realistic guidelines and recommendations for tunnel safety – will be realised because representatives of all stakeholders in tunnel safety from nine European countries are members of the SafeT network.
