Safety Doors in Austrian Homes

A survey conducted by the market research institute Triconsult in December 2006 showed that 16,2 percent of the homes in Austria were equipped with a burglary alarm. 52% of the persons in the sample (850 interviews in total) stated that they had installed a kind of security door in their homes. However, not every door that is equipped with additional safety measures can be called a „safety door“. According to the ÖNORM B 5338 (Austrian standard) a door has to meet certain security standards to be called a safety door.

A follow-up survey was performed in March 2007 to take a closer look on the households that really are equipped with a safety door according to ÖNORM. The results were surprising: Almost half of the persons, who claimed before to have installed a security door, did not know whether their security door did actually meet the security standards demanded by ÖNORM. 30% stated that they were sure they had installed an “ÖNORM safety-door” in their homes. 21% said they did not have a door meeting all the standards of the norm but had some additional security measures.

In some federal states of Austria, like Vienna or Lower Austria, the installment of safety doors is sponsored by the local government. 42% of the persons in those federal states knew about the possibility to get a governmental sponsorship for their safety doors, but the financial aid was not the most important reason for buying a safer door.
