European Child Safety Alliance

The European Child Safety Alliance is a network of dedicated professionals committed to the reduction of injuries amongst children in the European Member States.

Alliance vision: Achieve safer living for children throughout Europe.
Alliance mission: To enhance the quality of children’s lives through the power of reason, solidarity and compassion.
Alliance scope: To focus on strategies that will assist in the reduction of injury related deaths and disability amongst children 0 to 18 years of age in the European Union Member States.

It is an initiative of the European Association for Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion (EuroSafe) and serves to provide a coordinated approach to child injury prevention in Europe, as well as advocacy to make the problem of child injuries visible. The program is led and managed by the European Child Safety Alliance Director, Joanne Vincenten.

The work is done in partnership with stakeholders from various disciplines involved in child injury prevention to promote a coordinated and consistent approach across Europe. KfV represents Austria, along with Große schützen Kleine (Safe Kids Austria) from Graz. Together these institutes share their expertise in child safety and disseminate the Alliance work across Austria.

For the past two years the Alliance has been lead on the ‘Be Water Wise’ water safety and drowning prevention campaign for the reduction of drownings in children across Europe. The next campaign theme is child home safety to be launched in the fall of 2006.

Currently the Alliance is also the lead partner for the Child Safety Action Plan (CSAP) project. This project is an initiative of the European Association for Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion (EuroSafe) and the Project Leader is Joanne Vincenten and the Project Manager is Morag MacKay. The work is done in partnership with stake-holders from various disciplines involved in child injury prevention in order to promote a coordinated and consistent approach across Europe. Funding for the project comes from the European Commission, ECOSA, expert group organisations and the country organisations taking part. The aim of this large-scale project is to use standardised tools and processes to develop action plans to enhance child safety in 18 countries in the European Union.

Austria is active in this process and will have an Austrian Child Safety Action Plan for in 2006.
